Update on Inigo

Thank you all so much for your kind words and your purrs.

We're very fortunate to have gotten a chest xray of him, he'd been treated about a month and a half ago for what we all thought was asthma. He responded really well to the steroids, so when he was having trouble breathing yesterday we thought it was the asthma. He stayed at the vet overnight, and I spoke to the vet this morning, and we decided to get him xrayed.

What the xray showed was a really, really large build up of fluid around the heart. His poor lungs were crushed by it, and his heart is pressing on his air pipe. This is what was causing the breathing problems, not asthma as we'd thought.

The doctor has removed a lot of the fluid, and his after xray looks much better, but they believe it is cardiomyopathy, which means that his heart is potentially failing.

We're going to take him to a specialist when he's able to travel, but the vet he's at is very, very good. He'll need to stay there till Monday at the earliest. He's getting the best possible care and he purred a little when we were giving him cuddles. I brought Thwack in to keep him company and one of his fleecy blankies. I also gave him his favorite Greenies, he sniffed them which was a positive sign.

Please keep purring for him. He is such a good boy, and so young.

Poor Inigo. We're purring, crossing paws and touching wood you get well soon.

Angel Simba said...

We know this is not the news you would have wanted to get, but hopefully he can be treated and still have years left of his life. Mom was reading up a little on cardiomyopathy, and one article said Ragdolls are at risk for it. When you are out of this crisis stage, the article said it is important to let they breeder you got Inigo from know.

Virtual hugs to Mom and Dad and purrs and nose-bumps for Inigo. Glad you have Thwack with you! It is no fun to have to stay over at the Vet.

HCM does NOT mean his heart is necessarily failing. He just may have a weakness in one of the walls of the heart, like Nimbus. Keep me posted, and I'll help as much as I can.

I came over from Beaded Tail because they mentioned that your kitty was ill.

Has your kitty been sleeping almost sitting up or propping himself up? That is a sign of congestive heart failure. When you know the signs, you realize that they have been there longer than you realize.

We lost our kitty, Ruth, to the same thing at one year old. Cardiomyopathy is very common in kitties, unfortunately. It happens, and while it breaks your heart, you just have to do what you can to keep them comfortable. I hope for a good outcome for you and your kitty. I'm sending love and hugs during this very difficult time.
